“Call us crazy, but it’s working”
Organic Valley focuses on the USDA organic law. This company see’s it as “an act of congress.” Under their ‘Humble History’ portion of their website, they mention that the company started in 1988 with just a few Midwest family farmers who were fed up with the state of American agriculture. This group knew that the family farms were going extinct and it was up to them to try to change this.
These farmers were told that their company wouldn’t last unless it was big enough to produce more for a larger population. But they took a stand because they “didn’t want to be industrial, chemical farmers.” A group came together to find a way to farm by still protecting the land, animals, economy and people’s health.Through bringing awareness to the issue, the local communities began choosing premium, organic milk over other brands, and they realized that they were “certainly right about one thing—people wanted quality food.”
Organic Valley follows their misson by farming with no antibiotics, synthetic hormones, toxic pesticides, or GMOs. Being organic is voluntary because no one is really forced to follow it. The company follows the “Organic Foods Production Act of 1990 which makes the label significant and sets it apart from other labels like “natural,” non-GMO, or humane animal care.” This law has many checks and balances which is more diffcult and timely, but it ensures the consumer that their product is quality. The compnay believes that “organic” is continously evolving, but it is the only way to produce quality. Organic Valley has many ways they cooperate with this law including, providing outdoor grazing and pastures for their animals, refraining from antibiotics and hormones, no use of pecticides, and non GMO products. These steps may be more costly and timely, but in the end, Organic Valley is a success towards quality products.
In conclusion, Organic Valley is a great alternative to other dairy products because of their humane and natural ways of farming!
