“One for One”
TOMS is a shoe brand that was created by Blake Mycoskie. The founder witnessed the hardships faced by children growing up without shoes when he visited Argentina. He realized he needed to do something to help so he created a company that would “match every pair of shoes purchased with a new pair of shoes for a child in need.” Mentioned in their misson statement, this company “helps address need and advance health, education and economic opportunity for children and their communities around the world.” TOMS participates in over 70 different countries and has given over 60 million pairs of shoes. The company also has other lines, such as eye glasses which is also the “one for one” deal - ultimately helping restore over 400,000 people’s eyesites. TOMS also participates in a clean water mission that helps to provide cleaner drinking water to the less fortunate. The company has created movements that millions of people participate in every year and through peoples passion for this issue, we can come together to help people live better lives.
TOMS works towards improving people’s quality of life, physical safety, mental health, and equalizing opportunity. People who are less fortunate are now given opprotunities to improve their lifestyles because of TOMS mission of “one for one.” Purchasing products from TOMS “has brought health and hope to individuals, families, and entire communities around the world.” To practice sustainability, TOMS allows for local manufacturing, which creates jobs for locals and eventually the shoes that are produced by the locals will be distributed there as well. TOMS practices sustainability through using their earnings to help people who are less fortunate and allow for people to have more opportunities, ultimately striving towards a more sustainable earth. Along with this, TOMS also respects our planet. “All of their shoes (and even the shoeboxes) are made with sustainable, recyclable and vegan materials.”
