“The business of business should not be about money. It should be about responsibility. It should be about public good, not private greed.”

Within seconds, a Google search for “The Body Shop sustainability” quickly reveals that this is probably one of the most sustainable makeup brands out there. Anyone who is familiar with the brand immediately associates it with fighting against animal testing. The Body Shop has been exceptionally outspoken about its stance in an industry where animal testing has been the norm.

Besides animal testing, The Body Shop expanded its sustainability targets for 2020, whicih includes ‘Enrich not Exploit: Enrich Our People; Enrich Our Products; Enrich Our Planet.’ With this framework in mind, The Body Shop launched 14 ambitious projects to becoming a truly sustainable global business, the biggest of which being to “have no negative impact on our planet and society and take meaningful action to allow us all to flourish forever”.

Created in 2016, a complete, summarized list of The Body Shop’s targets for 2020 is as follows:

Enrich Our People

  1. Increase the Community Trade program from 19 to 40 suppliers to enrich supplier communities.

  2. Benefit 40,000 economically vulnerable people globally through access to work within The Body Shop’s supply chain.

  3. Engage 8 million people in the Enrich Not Exploit mission.

  4. Invest 250,000 hours of skills to enrich local communities’ biodiversity.

Enrich Our Products

  1. 100% traceable and sustainably sourced natural ingredients to protect 10,000 hectares of forest and other habitat.

  2. Reduce the environmental footprint across all product categories.

  3. Publish information about products and ingredients: natural origin, green chemistry, biodegradability, and water footprint.

  4. Develop an innovation pipeline to deliver pioneer ingredients from biodiversity hotspots to help enrich those areas.

Enrich Our Planet
